CampusWorks Assists Clients to Obtain over Five Million Dollars in Educational Technology Awards Print E-mail

April 2, 2007, Sarasota, FL - CampusWorks Inc. (CWI), an Information Technology management firm specializing exclusively in technology management services for community colleges, reports that the CampusEAI Consortium awarded five major grants to longstanding clients of CampusWorks. The five colleges are:

  • Grand Rapids Community College, MI (GRCC)
  • Bunker Hill Community College, MA (BHCC)
  • Middlesex Community College, MA (MCC)
  • Red Deer College, Alberta, Canada (RDC)
  • Metropolitan Community College, MO (MCC)

The CampusEAI Consortium is an independent, non-profit organization supporting educational institutions with money, software and services. The Oracle Portal Project enables CampusEAI’s grant recipients to enhance access to online campus services for all members of the campus community. CampusWorks collaborated with key staff members at GRCC, BHCC, MCC, RDC and MCC to win distribution of over five million dollars to the colleges during the next five years.

Grand Rapids Community College, established in 1914, enrolls more than 24,000 credit and non-credit students and is a leader in technology use in the academic mission. In March of 2005, GRCC and CampusWorks formed a technology management and IT partnership. Juan Olivarez, President of GRCC, was exploring options for the appointment of a new Chief Information Officer. This position has responsibility to lead 90 talented staff and an allocation of about 9 % of the College's budget. After a year-long review of options, CWI was selected to furnish a technology management and project delivery team including the Chief Information Officer to fill this important position. Since that time, talented College and CWI staff have achieved significant milestones in enhancing the core administrative (PeopleSoft) and identity management/security/portal platforms. In addition, they introduced a new Learner Resources and Technology Solutions Re-organization and completed a four-inch thick comprehensive Technology Tactical Plan, “Integrating Technology Into The College’s Teaching And Learning Mission,” which outlines the innovative learner-centered teaching, learning, and student success initiatives that CampusWorks has achieved at GRCC.

As part of its strategic plan, GRCC conceived the Oracle Portal to accomplish multiple goals. The Portal will extend access to students and prospective students by providing a web-based or wireless gateway to the GRCC Home Page. The Portal simplifies access through convenient, unified entry. In addition, the Portal will aid integration of multiple business units and simplify users’ navigation among service offerings.

Bunker Hill Community College, founded in 1973, enrolls more than 7,800 students and is a leader in distance learning technologies. At BHCC, CampusWorks began work in 2000 on an important IT transformation project to stabilize, streamline and enhance their core administrative systems platform, network/infrastructure operation and instructional technology offerings. Thanks to the hard work of talented BHCC and CWI staff, Bunker Hill CC now has an efficient, full-function and reliable ERP platform (Datatel) which supports all college-wide operations. In September 2005, BHCC signed a multi-year contract extension with CWI based on their successful and cost-effective IT partnership, representing an 11-year partnership of outstanding technology management.

This CampusEAI Oracle Portal Grant will facilitate BHCC’s efforts to integrate teaching and learning interests as well as all student services. BHCC will benefit from a simplified interface which provides access to a wide variety of services. The portal, by providing more efficient, streamlined internal processes, will improve productivity and stimulate cost savings. All BHCC website visitors will use a one-stop web interface through which users log in once and are then able to access all online services almost instantly.

Middlesex Community College, established in 1969, has campuses in Bedford and Lowell, Massachusetts. The College provides educational opportunities to more than 11,500 students. CampusWorks and MCC began their technology consulting collaboration in early 1999. On December 22, 2005, President Carole Cowan signed a five-year contract extension, creating a 12-year IT partnership. As the Chief Technology Officer for Middlesex, CWI has built an extremely efficient, robust, and responsive core administrative systems platform (Banner) as well as advancing technology in the College's teaching and learning mission. President Cowan has been so impressed with CampusWorks service that she presented the College’s “President's Award” to Dr. Darrow Neves, MCC's Chief Technology Officer and CampusWorks Senior IT Executive.

MCC’s major technology goal is easy access to relevant information. MCC’s interest in participating in the grant program concerns two initiatives driven by the College’s strategic plan. The Recruitment Initiative will take advantage of new and emerging technologies to build relationship capital by engaging prospective students in their greatest interests, thus linking them strongly to MCC. The Advising Initiative, which fits with the recruitment activities, will continue to strengthen the students’ connection to MCC.

Red Deer College, founded in 1964, has been a leader in education for more than 40 years. Currently, under the leadership of President Ron Woodward, RDC offers a comprehensive array of programs to more than 20,000 students, primarily in the Central Alberta region. CampusWorks was selected and appointed as CIO in June of this year to furnish a technology management and staff augmentation team based on an extensive due diligence which focused on our successful work and results for other clients. Under this technology management partnership, CampusWorks is providing a technology management team and technical experts who, along with talented Red Deer IT staff, are responsible for all technology initiatives and objectives and for achieving a significant return on technology investments. Working directly with faculty, staff, students and the administration, CampusWorks began by adapting technology planning best practices to implement a creative information technology planning model which will provide RDC with a comprehensive technology plan and blueprint for all technology initiatives through 2011.

The grant awarded to RDC by the CampusEAI Consortium will assist the College in becoming a demonstration site for Canadian higher education IT best practices and enhanced technology utilization. With the help of the grant, RDC expects to stay ahead of the curve in terms of emerging technologies so that they provide their students with the most advanced learning opportunities.

Metropolitan Community College, founded as the Kansas City Polytechnic Institute that enrolled 234 students in 1915, today has more than 43,000 students a year who attend five campuses spread across four counties, making MCC the largest institution of higher education in Kansas City. MCC selected CampusWorks to adopt their best practices and develop a robust and full technology tactical plan. In addition to developing the tactical plan, CWI also assisted in applying for a grant with the Campus EAI/Portal Consortium, which was granted in the amount of $1,231,909.

CampusWorks technology planning development effort utilized a “best practice” approach which included a comprehensive review of the current and projected state of technology at MCC and an exploration of the adaptation of new emerging technologies. Additional technology planning topics included current technology planning activities, ERP enhancement requirements, enrollment management initiatives, instructional technology/distance learning initiatives, and technology organization and structure.

CampusWorks is pleased to add MCC to the growing number of colleges who have selected CampusWorks for technology transformation, leadership, and planning assignments throughout North America.
